Nuclear storage not sustainable - Westminster Energy ForumMonday, 9 February 2009 Dr Paul Gilchrist, Head of Fuel Cycle technology, NDADisposition of Plutonium consultation – emerging strategic options The successful management of nuclear’s waste legacy was essential, said Gilchrist. He said that today Britain had 100 tonnes of plutonium waste, as result of 50 years of Magnox and AGR generation. The NDA had been established in April 2005 and had been asked to consider whether the UK’s plutonium from nuclear generation was a liability or an asset. He suggested that at the current time the NDA does not consider the storage option for nuclear waste to be a sustainable solution, and was looking at disposal, whether in glass, ceramic, cement or low spec MOX.
