Govt's role to facilitate not mandate - Westminster Energy Forum

Monday, 9 February 2009

Adam Dawson, Director, Nuclear New Build, OND DECC

Strategic siting assessment – feedback from the consultation, and the UK’s licensing status

Dawson reiterated earlier speakers’ assertions that it was the government’s job to facilitate new nuclear, not procure or mandate.

He described the criteria for screening nominated nuclear sites as against nuclear safety, environmental potential, societal issues and operational requirements.

When considering siting it was important, he said, to recognise that public support for nuclear power is conditional.

People are still concerned about safety, waste, cost and about nuclear crowding out renewables. This still had to be carefully taken into account.
